Settlement minimum
Settlements have a $10 default minimum. Transactions accumulate until the threshold is reached, then settle in a single USDC transfer. This minimizes gas costs for small payments.
Gas fees
USDC transfers on Base cost less than $0.01 in gas. 402.md covers gas fees for settlement transfers to merchants.
Testnet
Base Sepolia testnet is free — no real USDC is used. Use it for development and testing:
const gateway = create402Gateway({
apiKey: process.env.FOUROHTWOM_API_KEY!,
apiBaseUrl: 'https://api-testnet.402.md'
})Comparison
| 402.md | Stripe | PayPal | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fee | 5% | 2.9% + $0.30 | 2.9% + $0.30 |
| Chargebacks | None | Yes | Yes |
| Settlement | 0-72h | 2-7 days | 1-3 days |
| Agent-compatible | Yes (x402) | Partial (ACP) | No |
| Micropayments | $0.01+ viable | $0.30 minimum effective | $0.30 minimum effective |
For micropayments under $10, 402.md is often cheaper than card processors due to no fixed per-transaction fee. A $0.05 API call costs $0.0025 in fees vs $0.30+ on Stripe.
All USDC amounts in the SDK are strings (e.g. '49.00', not 49.00). This avoids floating-point precision issues with financial amounts.
